Jaivana: The mighty cannon

August 09, 2008 By: Avishek Category: Rajasthan, jaipur No Comments →

The Jaivana is the largest wheeled cannon ever made. Located in the splendid Jaigarh Fort at Jaipur, Jaivana was made in the year 1720 during the reign of Maharaja Sawai Jai Singh II. Resting on a high carriage of 4 huge wheels, it is one of the strongest cannons in the world. It had the capacity to fire a single shot of around 100 kg of gun powder. The barrel of the cannon is around 20 inches and weighs around 50 tons. The barrel is decorated with designs of animals and flowers. There are 2 thick rings on the barrels which were used to lift the cannon. Locals say that it took 4 elephants to lift Jaivana around the axis.

According to legends, Jaivana was once shot in the direction of Chaksu as a test fire. The impact was so enormous that a huge crater of the size of a pond was created.
